چکیده

The alveolar macrophage (AM) is a critically important cell playing a prominent role in lung inflammation via the production of oxygen radicals, enzymes, arachidonic acid metabolites, and also a large panel of cytokines. Among interstitial lung disorders, silicosis and coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) are the most widespread fibrotic lung diseases. Although their pathophysiology remains incompletely understood, several lines of evidence suggest the participation of cytokines produced by AMs at least in the initiation of the alveolitis. In vitro exposure of AMs (obtained from healthy subjects) to coal dust particles triggered a significant release of tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and interleukin-6, by comparison with titanium dioxide used as a biologically inert control dust. Moreover, it appeared that coal mine dust was more aggressive than similar concentrations of pure silica, suggesting that cytokine secretion induced by coal mine dust was not exclusively related to the presence of silica but resulted from a complex interaction between the different components. In silicosis and CWP, bronchoalveolar lavage showed a large influx of mononuclear phagocytes, with an increased spontaneous production of oxidants, fibronectin, neutrophil chemotactic factor, and also of interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha. This spontaneous cytokine release was associated with an increased cytokine messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression in the lungs of coal miners.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Silicosis and coal workers' pneumoconiosis.

Exposure to coal mine dust and/or crystalline silica results in pneumoconiosis with initiation and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. This review presents characteristics of simple and complicated coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) as well as pathologic indices of acute and chronic silicosis by summarizing results of in vitro, animal, and human investigations. These results support four basic m...

Prevalence of Pneumoconiosis in Hubei, China from 2008 to 2013

We have investigated newly reported pneumoconiosis cases in the province of Hubei, China from 2008 to 2013, to identify the major problems and challenges, and explore possible solutions for its prevention and control. We analyzed the data on new cases of pneumoconiosis from annual reports, including case distributions, patient ages, exposure duration, disease stages, and enterprise types. A tot...

Pneumoconiosis Trends in the US Construction Industry: A comparison between the coal mining and construction industries

This paper presents a comparison between the construction and the coal mining industries in the USA relating to the different types of pneumoconiosis (i.e. silicosis, asbestosis, Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP), and byssinosis) in order to determine the relationships between each type of pneumoconiosis and the occupations in both industries that are mostly affected by the disease. In this st...

Serum Levels of TGF-β1 and MCP-1 as Biomarkers for Progressive Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis in Retired Coal Workers: A Three-year Follow-up Study

Various cytokines activated by the inhalation of coal dust may mediate inflammation and lead to tissue damage. Objective of this study was to examine the relationships between coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) progression over a 3 yr period and the serum levels of cytokines in 85 retired coal workers. To investigate the relevance of serum cytokines in CWP, serum levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8),...
